Hepatitis A

FACTS:

  • Hepatitis A is transmitted through stools of people with Hepatitis A.
  • Hepatitis A is not a long term infection.
  • Once you have Hepatitis A you cannot get it again.
  • Adults have more symptoms than children and they can last 2 to 6 months.
  • When someone has symptoms, they can include yellow skin, fatigue, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, fever, and loss of appetite.   See a doctor if any of these symptoms is present.
  • A blood test can confirm Hepatitis A

 

TO PREVENT SPREADING TO OTHER INDIVIDUALS:

  • When possible, receive vaccinations for Hepatitis A.
  • Always wash your hands with soap and water after using the bathroom, changing a diaper.
  • Always wash your hands before preparing and eating food.

 

TREATMENT:

  • A child needs extra sleep and good nutrition.
  • Give adequate fluids. An IV for fluid may be needed to replace fluids lost by vomiting, fever and diarrhea.
  • A child might need medications for fever and for itching
